We'd like to extend our appreciation to all those who attended our recent Coping with Care presentations held in major cities across Canada. The care and support of ailing parents is an issue facing many families today - and receiving the right information early on is key.
Whether it's the need for financial support or medical and emotional care, knowing how to handle a parent's sudden disability or illness can dramatically improve the situation for everyone involved and help to maintain a family's goals and lifestyle.
For those who were unable to attend the event, or participants interested in learning more, the following information provides an overview of our Coping with Care presentation.
Coping with Care was devoted to educating the sandwich generation of Canadians who are challenged with supporting ailing parents and managing the resulting impact on their families. The presentation featured two speakers - Lisa Genova, highly regarded author of the award-winning book Still Alice and Evelyn Jacks, tax expert and President of the Knowledge Bureau - who discussed both the personal and financial consequences of a parent's sudden disability or illness.
Lisa Genova is the author of The New York Times bestselling novels Still Alice and Left Neglected. Lisa's debut novel is an undeniably poignant story about a lesser known form of Alzheimer's disease - the early-onset form that affects people in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Powerful and compelling, the book has been hailed as "moving and haunting," "a work of pure genius," "insightful, tragic, inspirational" and "heartbreakingly real." Her latest work, Left Neglected, has received immense praise from the press and esteemed authors such as Jodi Picoult, Jacquelyn Mitchard, and Brunonia Barry.
Lisa graduated valedictorian from Bates College with a degree in Biopsychology and has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Harvard University. She has done research on the molecular etiology of depression, Parkinson's disease, drug addiction, and memory loss following a stroke. She is a proud and active member of the Dementia Advocacy & Support Network International and Dementia USA and is an online columnist for the National Alzheimer's Association. She spends a considerable amount of time acting on stage in Boston and in local independent films. Lisa lives with her family in Cape Cod, MA.
